minor gripe: I do wish the term ‘killer whale' would be locked in a closet to never return. They are not killers, nor are they whales. #ClimateChange #Pollution #GlobalWarming #EndFossilFuels

@chris I will direct your complaint to the Holy Roman Emperor.

whups! tripped my #wordgeek trigger. Trivial trivia shall spew!
Cetacea Delphinidae Orcinus
Cetacea, from Cetus: https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/cetus
So, yes, a whale, but in their own special branch within the oceanic dolphins.

I blame the same people who convinced us that dolphins are nice because of their persistent (involuntary) smile.
Dolphins are assholes. And they're very intelligent. I wouldn't doubt for a second that it was initially the dolphins' idea to slander the orcas with the derogatory moniker.

@chris Nitpick: They are cetaceans, therefor whales, specifically toothed whales (orcas, sperm whales, belugas, dolphins, etc). As for whether they are killers or not depends on whether you're a seal.

@Chigaze I mean... a lot of things eat other things. We don't call Mountain Lions "Killer Cats"
