A few weeks ago, I took the Coast Starlight train from Emeryville to Portland, Oregon.
I slept in the dining car, which has a wonderful observation lounge with glass windows all over. I woke up to this view

@skinnylatte that’s gorgeous. I’ve been wanting to make the same trip for for a while. Were there a lot of good opportunities for photography?
-
@collin some areas of the train ride were very scenic. But it can be hard to get good shots as you’re behind all that glass.
-
@skinnylatte great shot!
But one logistical question: um, did they *let* you sleep in the dining car? (I imagine you woke quite early as they prepared for the first breakfast seating, no?)
-
@scott there is a cafe section of the dining car that’s really the observation car. That’s open to anyone at any time. The sit down section of the dining car in the next carriage was more closed.
-
@skinnylatte should have said I was asking as someone who has tried to sleep on Amtrak trains (including coast starlight) with varying levels of success
-
@scott I did have a giant back ache the next day
