LOL.

@liamvhogan @NewtonMark maybe it’s the desire for power and leadership (I’d be unsurprised and am sure I’ve read things along these lines). Again sortition.
-
@trib @NewtonMark the appeal of sortition processes isn’t that you get better people (you don’t, at least if you’re getting a good slice of the population. You might get worse). What you’re doing ideally is getting rid of exclusionary career paths that refine out whole classes of people, and politics is honestly not too bad here, because of that constant turnover and competition. Law is worse, the public service worse, the media much much worse
-
@trib @NewtonMark what you see in politics is some specific isolated work environments that are almost designed to encourage bad behaviour, and to exclude outsider views. APH in Canberra is as isolated in a lot of ways as a FIFO site.
-
@liamvhogan @NewtonMark this is 100% the worst timeline *because* these conversations have to exist because the worst people end up in power.
-
@liamvhogan @trib @NewtonMark wasn't that part of the design, to make it harder for protesters to organise for so far away?
-
@liamvhogan @trib Politics is worse than that, though, because sociopaths have been preselected long before they get to the point where they land in Canberra.
Our political parties have cancer in their hearts. The only way to succeed in politics well enough to be the kind of person featured in a NACC inquiry is to pass through all the qualification gates that shape you and kneed you into the kind of person the party apparatus wants.
If your brain isn’t fundamentally broken, you don’t have a chance in politics and will have to go and get a real job like a normal person instead.
-
@NewtonMark @trib that theory doesn’t account for the poor behaviour of non-party and smaller party elected members, though. Senator Babet faced no preselection. The Greens aren’t notably better in terms of bad office behaviour (bullying, harassment) than the older parties, nor are the Teals, who have no preselection or Party at all

@liamvhogan @trib @NewtonMark this is my argument about Canberra. It *is* literally a FIFO camp, combined with a bunch of massively institutionalised people. I joke with my friends it should be closed and parliament moved back to Melbourne but only half meaningfully.
-
@morebento @trib @NewtonMark seriously, when people say abolish the States, I say no, abolish the Commonwealth, that’s the one that sucks
-
@liamvhogan @trib @NewtonMark I like the Swiss model
-
@liamvhogan @trib @NewtonMark hey actually we are about to see trump and musk try to do that so maybe see how it goes 🧟️
-
@liamvhogan @trib @NewtonMark also: with sortition, the people who make the laws know that in a couple of years those laws will apply to them.
