Ahaha I was at a food cart and some new Portland resident was being salty, telling her friend ‘can you believe people in SF ask me if I miss the food there?!’

@skinnylatte One of my hottest American food takes is that SF and NYC have amazing food if you're gonna drop a bunch of $$$... but if you only have like $10 to spend, you're probably gonna get a better meal in PDX or LA.
-
@sidereal SF’s $$$ is also aggressively mediocre, other than Atelier Cren which is $$$$$$
-
@PizzaDemon nice! Oakland and San Leandro have one per block, which is very nice, but none of this at all in SF (a handful of Ethiopian spots and that’s it)
-
@sidereal @skinnylatte I think that’s an extremely reasonable take
-
@analogist @sidereal New York at least has vast array of $ regional Chinese and Caribbean foods
I’m thankful for the decent Mexican in SF, tho it’s not numerically equivalent to just the no of also great immigrant foods of nyc

@skinnylatte @PizzaDemon I would agree that Portland has some great food spots and its much more “democratized” than SF.
But there is a great Ethiopian Restaurant in San Jose near Saratoga: Zeni’s https://www.zeniethiopianrestaurant.com/ if you ever find yourself down that way

@rberger @PizzaDemon yeah I’ve been there. It’s good.
San Jose has unparalleled Vietnamese, Indian and Korean food for sure, too
-
@rberger @PizzaDemon South Bay has TWO dosa shops that make the dosa exactly like I like them (Mysore / Bangalore style): Bengaluru Thindi and Surya Darshini

@LeafyEricScott that, and the ‘generic new Californian’ foods that’s really just about not seasoning or not being imaginative
I don’t think I need more new Californian food beyond Alice waters, and I find it deeply boring in this decade to still be doing that
I do also have a theory that sf folks are really just not that interested in new things they don’t know, unlike say, LA or maybe even Oakland

@skinnylatte I would have to agree with you about food in SF in general. About the only things I really miss from living in SF are Mission burritos and pupusas. We also lived near a couple of great places for arepas and Yucatecan food, but they unfortunately didn’t last long.

@StanWonn there are a ton of great Yucatán and Salvadoran spots in sf now (new ones keep opening!) and that’s essentially mostly what I eat when I do eat out there.
I like the Chinese, Indian, other immigrant foods too but other than a handful of spots in the city (1-5 good ones each), it’s much more fun in the east and South Bay for those cuisines too.

@skinnylatte @PizzaDemon You must have read my mind. I wanted to ask you for some recommendations for some good Indian restaurants!
