Hey #Linux friends (and enemies) I have a weird #SSH question.
-
@Edent whats the server side config?
anything weird in the authorized_keys file maybe? -
@comicmuse hmm. Any way to test for that? I don't have a home directory set in the config.
-
@aslmx
Nothing obvious that I can see:Host example
HostName example.com
user edent
Port 123
IdentityFile ~/.ssh/id_ed25519
ServerAliveInterval 15
ServerAliveCountMax 3 -
@Edent are you able to pass a command when doing the ssh? Like ssh a@b /usr/bin/ls
-
@Edent The "verbose" options in ssh stack, so -v is useful but -vvvv is All The Things. Whenever I've had an SSH problem the answer was in -vvv or -vvvv somewhere.
-
@Edent Anything weird in e.g. .bash_profile or .bashrc on the server?
-
@hulver I'll try again when it next hangs. Thanks.
-
@mhoye I'll try again when it next hangs. Thanks.
-
@ilikejam not that I can see. When I can log in, it all looks normal.
-
@Edent Umm...can you connect as root? (This happened me recently and was my way out)
-
@comicmuse nope! But the timeout seems to clear after a few minutes.
-
@Edent Can you see the config on the server side? scp will usually use the sftp subsystem, which is separate from the normal login config. (eg your account might have an invalid system shell.)
-
@gwire which config file should I look at?
What's weird is that, after a few minutes, I can usually log in.
But SCP carries on working even when shell doesn't.
-
@Edent If you can log in, but after a delay, I'd check that the server doesn't have some kind of checks at the login level that are timing out. (eg a reverse DNS check due to the use of hostnames in /etc/hosts.*)

@arichtman I can SCP files - via the same port - so I know packets are hitting it.
-
@Edent A weirdly configured shell, or no shell?
-
@derickr none whatsoever.
I *think* I can trigger it by uploading files in Filezilla. No idea *why* though!
-
@Edent are both ends time synced?
