Three people reached out last night to let me know that my question to Matt Mullenweg is quoted in WP Engine’s lawsuit against Matt and Automattic.
I’m still stunned by his response to my question.
But then, everything that has come out over the last week and in this lawsuit make it clear that not everything was as it seemed in the WordPress community.

WP Engine’s lawyers redacted my information in my tweet, but missed my handle in the reply from Matt.

@grigs Has “to mullenweg something” being coined as a term yet?
-
@schwa not yet, but it should be
though TBH, his actions have been so baffling that I don't know that I can define what “to mullenweg something" is. WTF has he been doing?
Or perhaps more importantly, where are his lawyers? Maybe they finally got to him because he's been quiet so far today.
-
@grigs I'm only tangentially aware of what's going on (not being a web or WP person) and but even from this outside perspective its all rather bizarre.
-
@schwa OMG did you see this? He was on Hacker News last night responding to randos AFTER WP Engine released their lawsuit:
https://x.com/ryancduff/status/1841667754379579681?s=61&t=8RnHVpPUfS6xMbEL3FSoBgMultiple people in the comments are like, “Dude, for your own sake, please shut up!”
-
@schwa Yeah, I’m not deep in the community either. We have a couple of clients using WordPress on WP Engine.
When the blow up first happened, I ignored it because that’s not where my interests lie. But then he impacted all WP Engine customers so suddenly I had to pay attention. And that's when I realized how weird the whole situation was.
So strange that I decided to ask him a couple of questions. I was surprised to get an answer let alone that the answer would end up in the lawsuit.

@schwa Honestly, I'm happy it is in court now. That's where it belongs.
Maybe one day we'll get a full accounting that will make some sense of how bizarre the whole thing has been.
In the meantime, I'm just happy that lawyers and judges are getting involved which is admittedly a strange thing to say.
