What convinced you to start adding alt text to images you post online?

@Heidentweet @anantagd Okay, I can see better what you meant here. The option "A stranger explaining it to me" was meant to cover that.
Arguably you could include "asking" and "explaining" as separate options to get extra granular.

@Heidentweet @anantagd In my head I thought of it as "Can you please add alt text so that I/others can understand what's in the image?" being an "explanation* of why it's needed.

@stefan What you describe here is "asking." The main question is: why did you use "nagging" as an alternative to "explaining"? It's a misogynistic form of "demanding."

@Heidentweet @anantagd I suppose I was trying to include that option from the point of view of someone who might see this as "nagging" to account for that group, if that makes sense.
I did once see someone argue that being "shamed" into adding alt text is what actually worked for them.
Perhaps that wording would've worked better. I appreciate the feedback, and I'll make sure to make more careful consideration in the future!

That makes a lot of sense, and means you make more space in your poll for ableist fucks than disabled people who have the *human right* of access. I also see in this answer "being shamed" is still more a reality for you than "being asked." Well, thanks for the explanation.

@stefan I started doing it because it was the norm here. In part because of the nagging, in part because it is a nice thing to do, in part because if I can't be bothered to write an alt text, the post is itself is probably too frivolous.
I was completely sold when I learned Mastodon's translate function also translates the alt text, translating memes without doing OCR or anything fancy. You don't even need to have impaired vision for alt text to be useful!
