Does anyone know the origin of the phrase “Do the next right thing”? Before Frozen 2 I’d only encountered the phrase in AA meetings and it appears that it wasn’t a common self-help/pop-psych phrase until after the movie came out.

As far as I can tell there was a columnist for Cosmo back around 1915 or so (Rupert Hughes) who used the phrase in a lot of his advice columns, then after he stopped writing the phrase mostly disappeared until it popped up in AA and other 12 step literature in the 80s then in a few (predominantly Christianity-centered) self help books in the 90s.
So it seems likely that the major origin of the phrase is AA and that Disney kind of appropriated the phrase for their movie. In this essay I will
