Musk tarnishing the #fediverse brand via spurious association with wrongdoing is EXACTLY the kind of "reputational anti-halo" that @tstruett, @rwg, @paufder and I warn about in our new article (currently on SSRN):

@aram oh boy...I hope big news sites don't pick this up or Fedi is gonna be in a shit storm of bad PR.
I wish we could do something about those gross CSAM instances, but due to the nature of the protocol being open and easily used, I doubt we'll ever get rid of them fully.

@BeAware I mean, you could say the same about the WWW. Or about email. Or about P2P. Or about Signal. Or about pens and paper and the USPS.
Open platforms can be misused by bad people for bad things.
The nice thing about the #fediverse is we can actually block, shun, identify, and prosecute those bad people.

@aram well...we can do the first three, however, prosecute we cannot. As most of them are located in other countries.
The issue comes when people find out how prevalent they are here and that there's really nothing being done about them besides blocks, which aren't visually apparent, especially by folks who don't know where to look for such thingsx

@ppb1701 facts.
Though it's unfortunate that in this case, he is not lying and there's not much we can do about it.️
