The fury of Spanish residents of one of the hardest hit towns toward the government boiled over.
-
@chris unverified that busloads of vols were taken to clean malls full of transnational brand shops. Frightening...never waste a valuable crisis.
-
@chris this triggers so much for me. Turns out, in an era of climate catastrophe where the environment, not government, holds the monopoly on violence, governments need to acknowledge that they risk holding a monopoly on care. If they don't deliver on that care, or don't share resources and ability... Well, the anger of the people they've let down is real and probably justified.
(Violence isn't justified, but a capable government abandoning people during an emerg. feels a lot like violence..)
-
@blaine i think the violence was fairly minimal, mostly just mud pies. But the anger is definitely real It will be interesting to see if the regional government steps down in the aftermath. They and the weather service seem to really be taking the brunt of the blame.
-
Another angle. Neo-nazis (pro-royalists) had gathered in the town and were inciting the townspeople against PM Sánchez. But Sánchez quickly left, leaving the king to face the angry crowd.
Personally, I think it’s verifiable that the neo-nazis showed up. It’s typical of them to take advantage of a crisis moment. But I’m sure there would have been a lot of anger even w/o agitators.

@chris the regional government here in the Slocan still hasn't acknowledged that they didn't do anything less than a great job.
Those of us who were affected this summer are still very much cleaning up (with *zero* help from the district or province, much less federally - in contrast with Jasper). The more this happens, the closer we get to *really* poor outcomes for society.
-
I was wondering if there was any political, far right or Francoist element. But I didnt want to make the claim without some proof
-
@blaine YES

@blaine this is how things break down. People lose faith in good governance.
