We need Mastodon or something like it more than ever now; but we also need something better than Mastodon as it currently exists
-
@inquiline It's pretty great the way it currently exists tbh ( :
-
@inquiline I like the culture here, but I can see how some would find it difficult to navigate and won’t take the time.
-
@bernicecbc it has pushed many many Black people off it. It’s too racist, and too white. That should be more alarming to everyone saying it’s all fine.
-
By this I mean: we need a network that isn't billionaire-controlled where certain forms of political/activist/organizer communication can be shared, gain traction, be visible; but also where the users/posters have the power to control and consent to who sees, replies to posts, etc.
Hint: the FLOSS-brained solutions people are pushing towards me in replies, with greater and lesser degrees of condescension, largely aren't it
-
@kerfuffle No. It's not. It's driven away entirely too many people including Black intellectuals and Black activists
-
@inquiline Logging back in over here to see your post and then several replies making the point of "better than Mastodon as it currently exists" for you was very funny, if I'm being honest.
-
@JoBlakely I would welcome more diversity. The platform needs to be a place of empathy and inclusion. I’m sorry to hear some people are having difficulty.
-
@bernicecbc many left after begging for white masto users to pay attention and call stuff out. Help run interference for them. Make it safer. Instead they got white people with entitled takes that are dismissed or condescending. Never engaging in good faith. I lost at least 4 friends off here since I joined. People I interacted with a lot. People I considered friends.
We lost many really great Black people early, & some get grief for creating blocklists to protect themselves from it. -
@jordantcarlson
It is a thing, reduced to its purest essence, for sure -
I find it very funny* that all these suggestions of using these different other, even more hyperobscure software completely misunderstand how the fediverse works. Its a server-based network, and the main issue is that you need people to start new servers with communities of these suggested softwares. And that nobody is doing that is just a tiny bit of a problem
*for very wrong definitions of funny

@[email protected] @[email protected] Eugen/Gargamel continues to not implement features minorities, particularly BIPOC, ask for and instead seems to prioritise engagement and his cachet. That’s fucking garbage.
