"The arrival of Bezos and Soon-Shiong to 'rescue' two major American newspapers has shown us how hollow were any hopes that billionaires will or even can make a difference in today’s economic and political climate."

"Aspiring oligarchs like Jeff Bezos, Elon Musk, and Musk’s fellow apartheid-era South African cohorts, David Sacks and Peter Thiel (who bought JD Vance’s Ohio senate seat and made sure he was Donald’s VP pick) should not have such an outsize role in our election. And they certainly shouldn’t be allowed to have positions of power in our government. But that could well be where we’re headed."

@wdlindsy ... 'But that could well be where we’re headed."
Yes it could. There's approx 160 million voters, 85mil will vote blue (or red) and 75mil will vote red (or blue) then the electoral college will decide witch color wins.
Imagine, if you will, if the other 100 million non-voters voted Green !!!!I know, I know ... ludicrous thinking

There is a very fundamental mistake in this statement, I believe borne of areluctance to accept the extremely dire nature of our current reality, and that is that these are not "aspiring" oligarchs but current and globally aligned oligarchs preparing to divvy up the world in a real world game of Risk with the names of nations as corporate proxies. -

@wdlindsy My cancellation is among these. I don’t know that it’ll make a difference to Bezos but I’m not throwing more money at him.
We need a new structure for journalism.

@nrmacdonald Yes, a point that definitely needs to be considered as one speaks of "aspiring" oligarchs here, I think.

William Lindsey :toad:replied to ramede last edited by
@ramede I'd love to imagine that the other 100 million voted at all! I live in a state with one of the lowest voting rates in the nation, and truly don't get what people are thinking when they don't choose to vote.

@EBecker Thanks for telling me. I hadn't realized that. Makes it all the more interesting that so many people are reading that article, doesn't it, when the style section probably normally doesn't get those kinds of hits.
