Response to DHH
I’ve taken this post down. I’ve been attacked so much the past few days; the most vicious, personal, hateful words poisoned my brain, and the original version of this post was mean. I a…

@jalefkowit Are "toxic personality" and "inability to scale" code for "a guy who just doesn't like working with VCs?" Or is that too generous (I don't know anything about the characters in this drama).
-
@jalefkowit This is bait. He just wants us to defend DHH which is in general the wrong choice.
Matt, just go to fucking therapy for a year. My god.

@gulovsen DHH is a controversial figure in his own right.
Inside the all-hands meeting that led to a third of Basecamp employees quitting
After very publicly introducing a policy that banned political discussions from the workplace, Basecamp’s founders found themselves criticized internally and externally. So they held a meeting to quell employees’ concerns, and only made things much, much worse.

@tante I just love the "I mostly hang out with VCs these days" energy in dismissing something like Rails because it doesn't throw off enough revenue
-
@jalefkowit I mean he is probably right: DHH doesn't really give the impression of being a good boss or leader. But that's not an argument. What a dipshit.

@tante @jalefkowit I'd be perfectly happy for the two of them to book a couples sub retreat to hug it all out beside the wreck of the titanic, honestly

@jalefkowit I'm just here for the
Neither of those guys is as consequential as they think they are.
And the whole point of Open Source is that you get more out of it if you aren't "capturing all of the value created".
This is basically bum fights for software devs.

@laprice It's less amusing when your entire business hinges on the outcome

@gulovsen And the "inability to scale" part is Matt saying to him "shut up, I'm a better business guy than you are." Not so much scaling in the technical sense as in the ability to turn a bunch of code into a business that generates X billion dollars a year.
This is a very narrow view of what it means for software to be successful, but it's not uncommon among the VC-funded Software Titan types. The more money your software generates, the better it axiomatically must be.

@jalefkowit It's the "If you're so smart, why aren't you rich?" argument.

@akuchling It would be one thing if DHH wasn't rich. But he is. He's just not AS rich as Matt, which is what makes it so precious. There are few things less compelling than rich guys waving their willies at each other

@jalefkowit @djsundog @tante Imagine a whole fleet of faulty submersibles carrying assorted billionaires. The dream was so close.

@[email protected] @[email protected] @[email protected] @[email protected] if those VC fucks funded the juicero, we could surely get them to fund a whole fleet of pencil lead submarines.
"it will change your life", we'll say. "you won't want to be without this essential business tool" -

Just circling back to the above to savor the flavor of "I know you spend all day racing expensive cars, but you could have been Atlassian!" Who the fuck dreams of being Atlassian
