Note: The Island One Network or "ION" is simply the first of what will be *many island networks ("archipelagos"), the intent of the "One" network is to provide a proof of concept and "anchor network" that can provide a sort of index of other available ...

@oliphant I love this idea, and I even thought of a good name for mine, just need to set it up.

@RainofTerra YES! Super exciting!!

Erin π½β¨replied to Oliphantom Menace on last edited by@oliphant I guess it makes sense from an intentional community perspective but the fact that you can be a part of the network and federate with ~anybody as long as your federation is allowlist is an.. interesting choice

@erincandescent Not at all, everyone has to agree with the network rules to join the network, and not abiding by them is reason to be removed from the allowlist.
https://codeberg.org/oliphant/islands/src/branch/main/ion
Since this is the first network, I wanted to start off with 4 relatively simple rules of conduct that still should rule out nazis.
Note there are also agreements that admins and moderators agree to uphold, to help moderate the space and enforce the code of conduct.

@oliphant I'm super digging this, and really glad you are inviting bipoc and just doing this in general. I'll be extremely curious to see how this goes.
If this has some traction, it would be a good idea to not just invite bipoc to the servers, but have them (both devs and non devs) participate in meaningful ways with the direction and technical aspects of the protocol and repositories themselves.

@burley In terms of governing the network, the network actually is not "mine", I just started it. As more islands join, my power over the network dilutes even further, as we collectively run it, perhaps adding rules for federation or other changes. It might even spawn new networks that are subsets or supersets of the existing network. And an early reason to invite BIPOC to this network is to ensure this isn't just another white space, to democratize it and give away power rather than hoarding it.
A big part of this is the collective organizational nature of it. This isn't the kind of network you join passively, as everything is opt-in. Your joining of it, your participating in it, your island's involvement with it, your agreement to the rules of the network to 'be excellent to each other'. Everything is opt-in, and (I think) thus more participatory.
If I do something to piss off enough people, they have the power to form their own network and cut me (and any islands I run) out of that network, and continue onward as if I never existed in the first place. They'd literally just copy the existing allowlist, and remove me from it, and start socializing their own network.
That's one aspect of this I really want people to get. Yes, there's technical stuff involved in terms of federating between islands, but for "regular folks" who don't care about the technical stuff, but do want to be able to have a say in how social media operates have an opportunity to help govern this network in a way we simply don't have on the "continental" fediverse.
Not every server on the denylist-based fediverse has agreed to the same principles, so holding them to account is much more difficult than it is on a network where everyone has agreed to be moderated under the same agreements.
The current system as I imagine it is that every admin and moderator in the network has a vote, for any matter that's put to a vote. That is the case whether or not a person even has the moderator tag, they just need to be put forth by their island in the role of moderator.
That also means more moderators means more votes, and since we want well-moderated spaces, and since larger servers will need more moderators, I think that's akin to a sort of representative democracy.
We'll see how this all plays out in practice.

@oliphant This gets even more interesting when imagining such networks involving other fedi software than pure microblogging such as ValueFlo.ws -speaking economic networks on Bonfire.
-
@sef Yes, in fact, I've heard Hubzilla mentioned as the kind of software that would be great for this kind of thing, but I'm not as familiar with the software.
The primary platform requirement is opt-in allowlisted federation rather than denylist-based.
