I started up a self-hosted instance on Bluesky and made it an Alf parody. I will report back that while I had some headaches with domain propagation it was actually not very painful.
The gotcha about the setup is that you need to use a wildcard domain for individual users. They offer a Caddy setup on their docker-compose to make it easier but if you're already running a server it can be harder to implement

@ernie I'm curious, you set up a Relay and/or a PDS? I'm currently writing a post about this, but I feel like the amount of resources involved in a Relay are a lot. I'm also really interested about what's required to set up an App View, as it seems like no one other than Bluesky have done this yet.

@gavinanderegg I set up a PDS, just to be clear. My use of “relay” was essentially me just trying to explain that the server does not do very much on its own.

@ernie Here's the new post, btw: https://anderegg.ca/2024/11/15/maybe-bluesky-has-won
