I REALLY don't want to join #Bluesky and love it here on the fedi.

@codemonkeymike I do linux game development. Although most of my post recently have been artwork. I decided to challenge myself to redraw 100 Dragon magazine covers in one year.

Conceptually, NixOS sounds very appealing because of its reproducibility and stability. I was sold on the idea the first time I heard of its unique approach. The package management sounds fantastic.

@8744781f42a20add2f942a2b4feabca5b451ca22c17e20db7884f55d72f30a56 the best way I've described it is it's like having your entire system in a docker compose file.
But even better because you get things like generations and nix-shell

@dulsi awesome. I love art in my feed too
-
@gairdeachas @DProofreaders PHP hosted on Linux. And your In the PacNW like me. Cheers! And welcome.

@antijingoist @corycarson haha that's funny. Most of my work has been small companies or direct to customers, so they couldnt care less what it's written in. Just that it gets done under budget.
And for me, I usually reach for PHP! Sorry not sorry
-
@brainofdane nice! It's great to meet fellow Linux nerds and people established with elixir. I'm new to elixir, but have been a developer my whole life.
How do you enjoy elixir

@hakki oh it's not. In any way.
However, the theory is that the fedi is a very small, under represented part of the population, so I'd be missing out.
I sure dont feel like that after this post!
-
@mystech oh that's exactly why I don't want to go over there and do the same thing as twitter.
And I don't care about numbers. It was just having enough people to feel like a have a solid group of good people.
I sure feel like that now!

@finner im 100% not going anywhere. Mastodon has easily been my fav social media experience. Hence my resistance to jumping into the bluesky.
Esp after this post. I believe this place has plenty of great people.

@alexanderadam @CrystalLanguage once a programmer, always a programmer. What's the big selling point with crystal?

Are people spending all their time online. After I reach a certain number of people I follow I find I cannot follow all their posts and only see the latest ones because I have a life offline.
-
@CIMB4 I actually really values the perspectives of "just users" of Linux. Welcome!

@the5thColumnist oh I do too. Which is why I don't wanna maintain this and another account somewhere else.
I reckon this is going to be just fine

The generations sound like a great way to experiment, version, revert back, etc. I can't wait to get more proficient in NixOS.
By the way, I have one application that comes only as a tar.gaz file with the executables for Linux. How does NixOS handle such applications? -
@8744781f42a20add2f942a2b4feabca5b451ca22c17e20db7884f55d72f30a56 Ive not needed to install from a tarball, but do have an app image I keep maintained as a nix package.
That's likely the answer. Make a nix package that builds it. Then it's part of your main build.
Are you sure it's not already in nix packages though? I'm always shocked how much is there
-
@8744781f42a20add2f942a2b4feabca5b451ca22c17e20db7884f55d72f30a56 for instance, this is how I make this beekeeper app image feel like a core part of my system
https://github.com/mkellyxp/nix/blob/main/common%2Fbeekeeper.nix
Then in my packages list, I call it like so.
(pkgs.callPackage ./beekeeper.nix { })
I bet there is a similar flow for tarballs

@codemonkeymike people are stupid. It may take a bit longer, but youβll get actual interactions here.
-
@mirabilos that's 100% been my experience.
The stupid people and the good interactions here
