I don’t think people will ditch their Facebook accounts until a #fediverse alternative offers a modern UI, is easy to use, and can replace Facebook Marketplace, Facebook Groups, Facebook Events, and Facebook Dating.
It’s definitely doable, but a lot of work. Anyone working on something like that?

@santisbon well there's hubzilla and friendica that sorta mimics some of these features.

@dj I understand the protocol very well. Clearly, you don't. Good bye.

@BeAware I know about those and Mobilizon (events), Flohmarkt (Marketplace), etc. Looking for something that can do all the listed functions with one account and a modern, pleasant UI. It could actually go a long way without extensions, just using

I would argue that the thing that makes the "Meta" ecosystem actually appealing to most people isn't the actual services, it's the single universal sign-on. With one login, I can use Messenger, all the FB services, Occulus, and a ton of games that use FB accts for backup.
That's the simplicity people are actually looking for, the services are secondary and rise/fall constantly (RIP FB's Games and Video) as the needs, wants, and interests of the community rise and fall.

@DrakkenZero @santisbon there's work being done on OAuth if I remember correctly, but I don't have a link or more info to share, just my memory of vaguely reading such things.

And I know that the fediverse technically has that - from here in Mastodon, I can follow users on other sorts of systems and hypothetically see and interact with their content, but having had tried using a bunch of the different services over the last couple of years, I can say the actual functionality of the interconnected-ness is PURE JANK in some places.

@DrakkenZero @santisbon to be fair, that's mostly because mastodon doesn't like to play nice with the AP standard...️
If they'd allow other "content types" besides just notes, then we would be able to see Lemmy posts in their entirety, for example.
They just like to make things for their own software without benefitting or taking into account the AP standard.
