It's happening! My book about Mastodon and the fediverse is now entering the production phase!
My editor at Oxford is asking what sort of cover image I would like. Any suggestions? Boosts appreciated!
More about the book here:
“Move Slowly and Build Bridges” Preview
So… it’s coming together. My current book, Move Slowly and Build Bridges: Mastodon, the Fediverse, and the Struggle for Ethical Social Media is mostly drafted! I am drafting a conclusion, but for now, I figured I would provide an overview of the book. This post gives a chapter-by-chapter summary of the draft. Since it’s a draft, things can still change, but as of today, I’m pretty pleased with the structure.

@inquiline this is always a good option!
-
@rwg Will the book be open access?
-
@rwg is there a pre-order link, or a time frame when the book will be publicly available for purchase?
-
@rwg I submit this for the mood board.
-
@rwg I can’t wait to read it! I have a module on the Fediverse in a course I teach. I would love to do a deeper dive! When is the release date?

@rwg Your book sounds fascinating, and I would very much like to order a copy if that's possible. I looked at the fossacademic.tech page, but I didn't see anything that looked like a link to order, so if you could post one, I'd really appreciate it.

@DaleHagglund Thank you! It's not quite to the point where it's for sale. A few months more...
-
@rinkside Likely in the Spring of next year.
I can recommend a bunch of readings (my own, and other authors') if you need them.
I have collected research on the fediverse here:
Bibliography
A blog dedicated to two things. First, an exploration of Free and Open Source tools useful to academics. Second, an exploration of the culture, politics, and practices of FOSS.

@stefan hell yeah!

@gMoon Not quite yet... probably in a few months.

@Ooze I don't think so. I'm going to write out a post about why, but the short answer is that I would be charged money to make it OA.
However, I have made several of my academic articles about the fedi OA, and they form the basis of much of the book. Plus, I'm going to share much of the book's material on my blog.
-
@rwg Whether or not one is charged is publisher dependant. Surely you can see what a bad look it is to publish a book about open things where the book itself is not open?
-
@rwg
Insta-buy when it's out! The topics are very relevant.If I may though, I don't like the free mention you gave in "... or How to Vaporize Elon Musk", i don't think he deserves such prominent placement, or that it's ultimately about him at all. Fine to write about him in the book of course, but I feel like it would be better to mention @Gargron, @dansup and other creators so prominently in chapter titles themselves.
-
@rwg this looks great and very interesting, let me know whether there is anything I can do to support!

@rwg a window with bird anti-collision stickers on it. Through the window you can see a solarpunk-ish cityscape featuring a pachyderm slowly walking across a bridge.
