We’ve been catching up on some deferred maintenance on both cars this summer.

Just got the quote to replace the A/C compressor in the Prius
$3991.82 ($3110 for the part)
Ya, uh... we'll consider our options…

@chris Damn. That seems like it should be the price to replace the entire a/c system - compressor, condenser, evaporator, and lines, plus recharging the system.

@chris that's a lot of labour.

@Burnt_Veggies it may be, they weren't hugely detailed but ya. It's big.

@chris OUCH! I wonder if a different dealer/shop would have an aftermarket part that might be a bit more reasonable in price?

@martin_fff dealer. It's a 2012

@chris ah, that's why, it's an out of stock item...
(site is amayama.com ) ... (hate dealerships) they won't install a salvage yard compressor either.

Chris Alemany🇺🇦🇨🇦🇪🇸replied to martin_fff last edited by
@martin_fff so that means it's essentially not made anymore?
-

@chris not necessarily. I think they used up their earlier production run, and haven't done a new run yet, so that 4k$ is on a dealer network shelf and they did "scarcity pricing" on it. Dealerships are assholes btw. It's basically a Yaris a/c compressor, and I have no idea what the difference is from the later revised one.

@martin_fff brutal!! The more I learn about 'dealers' the less I ever want to buy any other car ever….

@martin_fff well and according to them it is somehow integrated into the Hybrid battery system so if the compressor blows it could damage the larger system

@chris @martin_fff
They are called Stealerships. Go to a local shop. There are lots of qualified independent shops in PA -

@chris @martin_fff Maybe price a used one? It would have to be SUBSTANTIALLY less expensive for me to consider it - but it is another avenue to consider.
Also - our Ford truck and Ford Escape are pushing 160,000 and 230,000 respectively - but I consider all repairs a piece of cake compared to buying a "new to me" vehicle. I feel your pain - between the two, I think we've put in $3,000 this year (almost $1,5 in tires alone)
Anyway - good luck!

@chris I am unable to comment on that as to whether it's factual or not, but I've had dealership mechanics lie to my face before...

@MillerTimeGarage @martin_fff ha! Ya for sure. Exhaust Masters has been good to us for a few things, we'll try there.
-
@DWTSquawk7600 @chris replacing an a/c compressor is not generally a "at home" job, and very few mechanics will install client supplied parts.

@martin_fff ya, my scepticism bells are ringing. Thanks for the link and info!
