Did you know that active users on Mastodon have been declining after an initial surge in October 2022 aka the big Twitter migration?
In my master thesis, I’m exploring reasons for this, like the challenges of #moderation on growing instances and lower engagement compared to other social networks. What do you think is causing this decline? Let me know!

Working in a sector (higher education) that also measures decline relative to sudden peaks rather than what preceded the surge, I’m interested that this graph also tracks underlying growth from mid 22 to mid 24, and then a plateau, with a genuine slight dip that picks up again. What happened through 2024? I filled out your survey and I’m keen to know what you find out about this. Good luck!
On the surge, I think in any peak you’ll see people trying things out of curiosity.
