ICYMI, the Cheeto in Chief just pardoned Ross Ulbricht, the founder of the darknet market Silk Road, who was convicted of running the $200M narcotics market and soliciting several murders-for-hire.
-
@briankrebs How long until he's appointed as a crypto czar?
-
@briankrebs nitpicking: he wasn't convicted for any murder solicitation.
"just" running the huge drug bazaar.
-
@troed right you are. thanks. fixed
-
@briankrebs to support the libertarians!
-
@briankrebs let's not forget murder-for hire!

@briankrebs I saw this and have no concept of what to make of it. The J6 pardons were disgustingly shameful of course but perfectly legible — he likes his brownshirts and wants them free to terrorize his opponents. But… was Ulbricht a big supporter? Influential with some key demographic? It really looks like Trump just … enjoys crime, with this one. I am really struggling to parse it.

@glyph @briankrebs Just about the only applause Trump got when he spoke at the Libertarian Party convention last year was when he promised to pardon Ulbricht.
Him mentioning it then implies that he thinks Ulbricht is important to libertarian voters, and the applause implies that he wasn't wrong, at least for that subset of libertarian voters pilled hard enough to attend the national convention.
Trump loudly booed at Libertarian convention when he asks attendees to ‘nominate me or at least vote for me’ | CNN Politics
Former President Donald Trump was loudly and consistently booed throughout his speech Saturday at the Libertarian Party’s national convention, particularly when he asked attendees to “nominate me or at least vote for me.”

@jalefkowit @briankrebs Thanks for this context. Still kind of baffling from a "why bring this up in the first place" way, but I think @nocoursewalks in another reply was probably correct in suggesting "someone with a personal grievance about Ulbricht walked into a room he was in and said the name" and that's how we got here
-
@glyph @briankrebs @nocoursewalks That was my first thought too, but him bringing it up way back in May makes me think it's more than just the usual "the last guy I talked to said it was a good idea" Trump thing.
(Either that, or the person who cares about Ulbricht is close enough to put the idea in his ear many times over a relatively long period.)

@briankrebs
The people who voted in the "CIC" won't ever see it, but he doesn't give one "fsck" about anyone who doesn't have money and he can use.
