So I’ve never been into jazz, but I’ve never really been exposed to it. I’ve been looking up jazz music online, but it’s things like Ray Charles, Frank Sinatra, Nat Cole… is that right? I just think of those good singers. I think I’m interested in more technical instrument players. Any suggestions where to start?

@tewha They have dabbled in jazz-ish stuff, so, maybe by some definition.
But Jazz, like Rock, and other major genres have infinite subgenres. Probably the easiest to get into is "bebop" or, later chronologically, "hard bop". Both tend to be up-tempo danceable genres. You mentioned you like piano, so yeah, Brubeck, but also Bill Evans. Both highly approachable. I'm a huge Mingus fan (bass), and Chet Baker (horn). @tewha Also something to be aware of… Traditionally stereo jazz recordings are very specific in how they set up their stereo separation. You may not be used to the hard panning of the instruments. Personally, I love it, and you get used to it. It's very unlike Rock.

@octothorpe I’m not usually bothered by that, unless a single instrument quickly changes channels.

@tewha oh no, it’s very static. Usually they’re recorded live, and the panning reflects placement in physical space.
