Do *you* have a personal website?
-
@pl I'll fix that in the rewrite. for now I'm only tweaking templates.
-
@mattl Hey! A smidge of feedback from a relative outsider: I did not know what libre.fm was at all, and a search of the web didn't help explain it much. It felt like a inside joke that I hadn't been let in on. The website has no about page explaining what and why. And it seems there is no content unless you sign up. I didn't know much about last.fm and even if I did, libre.fm doesn't give me any clue that there is a similarity of any type. I had to find the libre.fm Wikipedia page to get a clue.
-
@poleguy yeah itβs definitely not as obvious as it was.
-
@mattl You see, I don't know how it "was." I'm new here, and honestly I'm not sure if I understand what libre.fm is or what it intends to be. I see a site with "sign in" and "register" but it doesn't say what for. Next is a roadmap that starts with discussion of "reopening" but doesn't say what's reopening, then it dives into technical milestones... but never says what's at the end of the roadmap or what was at the beginning. There is "file an issue" on a project that has no source code.
-
@mattl I only mention this to help provide you insight into what it feels like hitting your site as an outsider. You can't have that "new user" experience, so maybe my comments are valuable? It seems you are presuming your site visitors all come with some sort of pre-established context. I'm interested enough to poke about. But it's not clear to me you are aware what this looks like to a complete outsider. It looks intentionally obtuse. Is it a walled garden that I must sign up to see?
-
@mattl Apparently I can listen to music on libre.fm if I go to libre.fm/listen without signing up. Yeah, the whole thing is not clear, especially to someone who's never heard of last.fm, never used it, nor has any idea why I'd want to. I guess I have to go find the wikipedia page for libre.fm which then drives me to investigate last.fm for a motivation? I don't feel that's a great funnel for enticing new folks. (I hope my feedback is helpful in some way?)
-
@poleguy Yeah, I think a large disconnect comes from the fact Libre.fm took off in a way that was unexpected and unwanted. Last.fm is a product. Libre.fm needs some context.
-
@mattl Ah, I see. I get a sense there is some trauma associated with it based on your "roadmap" page. I went to the wayback machine and looked at what the site looked like in 2019 which gives a much more clear explanation of why I might be interested in signing up, what it does, etc.
It seems like an interesting project; good luck! I'll return to lurking now.
-
@poleguy Take a look at the site now. Hopefully clears things up a tiny bit.
-
@pl Did you look at your profile yet today? https://libre.fm/user/pluc
-
@mattl I'm now more intrigued than ever. I'd love to hear the back story... the "unexpected and unwanted" bit... have you written it up? Maybe you need a 'history' page?
But I've already caused you too much trouble on a page that clearly must not be the 'funnel' driving 'engagement'.... he.he.
I said I was returning to lurking...
...but also did just sign up.
-
@poleguy yeah this is an open source project and it wasnβt supposed to be a silo of users. 370,000 users on Libre.fm
But it gave us my other project, GNU social, the precursor to Mastodon.
Be sure to add your fediverse URL to your profile. See my profile for an example.

@mattl Are you seeking any UI or graphic design help on this project, at this time? I'd love to contribute, if so...happy to move this convo to GitHub, email, etc.

@nsmsn yes but not on the current website.

@mattl
I just got back from hockey. Had a good time with IRL people....I did add a fediverse URL to my profile. My honest impression: The edit feature is all kinds of buggy, but I think I succeeded despite the weird error messages and confusing UI.
I don't understand why adding a fediverse URL to my profile adds any value. I don't understand how to find your profile. I can only guess what a 'profile' even is, really.
I feel alone on this site after signing up. I don't really get it.
-
@poleguy the edit feature doesnβt invalidate the cache to keep the site fast.
My profile is linked from my mastodon profile. Adding it to your Libre.fm profile lets you verify yourself on mastodon.
-
@poleguy what error messages are you seeing btw?
-
-
@poleguy send a screenshot of what you were trying to enter into the Fediverse field. Also any error messages you saw.
Iβm not worried about the centering.
-
@mattl
The text of the error is "Laconica profile must be a URL".
It is very hard to notice that an error even occurred, or notice the message because when you click on submit the screen jumps to the top, there are two highlighted yellow pieces of text, and the error is not at the bottom where you clicked submit, nor at the top where the screen jumped to, nor next to the "Fediverse Profile" field that has the error, but in the middle where there is a bunch of similar text. What's "Laconica?"
