Lots of people asking questions about the fediverse over at /r/fediverse
-
Hell, I think domain names other than lemmy.xxx is confusing some people.
This. Techies know custom domains are a thing. A LOT of people are going to look askance at anything that isn't among the most common TLDs. I mean, lemmy.zip is kinda funny. But it also screams "don't click me, zip files from an unknown source are dangerous!"
...and now I'm having intrusive thoughts about exe being a TLD. I'm-a go lay down until the voices stop.

Is it though? No one waited around and avoided email because they weren't sure which provider to use. Just make an account and go... if you hear or see other features that you want, then move.
-
I get downvoted in every political discussion here. But at least nobody banned me yet. On reddit they banned me from the subreddits that are supposed to represent my views!

Some instances filter which content comes through, which might concern some people. And email services offer different features these days, so people might assume the same of fediverse instances as long as we’re drawing that comparison.

Risky click.

I would urge you to re-read that and scrutinize the claims because I do not think that should ruin your view of Dan. Think about the claims and ask your self if you really care about those points.
That letter comes off as extremely pathetic. The guy is human. Nothing said there was crazy or rude or worth canceling support for a over. None of the nitpicked points had nearly enough evidence or context for people to make a judgement. The presentation was extremely bias and borderline untrue.
For example "I am also in talks with @hazy! to join our team" is not an official offer to join the team. Yet this letter presents it as a set in stone offer that Dan went back on for unjustified reasons. Dan gave his reasons why the offer fell through and if he is to be believed (and if he isnt) then the negotiations fell through and thats normal and ok.
Another example. This letter says Dan is so mean to his fellow fedi devs calling them rats. Then shows 3 instances of Dan clearly responding to attacks against him. Why can these "fellow" fedi devs attack dan but Dan cannot defend himself? The comments for Dan were unbelievably tame. He does not call fedi devs rats he calls some of the people attacking him rats. There is a big difference there.
I would push back on any example in that doc (except the open source one) because they all seem very stupid.
People start these projects as a hobby and users expect higher than corporate level professionalism its insane. You want people to be human but you dogpile anyone who acts human.

No, but a ton of people got AOL and Prodigy email addresses at first because they got an email address with their account.
-
Idk I think the sign up phase could be simpler. A default instance and clear short documentation upon sign up would help. I say this not for me (nerd for 30 years) but just got my partner to switch and they were resistent due to the account creation process. Maybe it's just the extra dimensions of "picking an instance" but it is a thing and a blocker for engagement.

IKR.
Call me a gatekeeper but it's not secret arcane knowledge for a privileged few.
You just sign up the same way you've done anything ever.

Yes, I recently created a Pixelfed account and I definitely balked at the "pick and instance" step. When I joined lemmy (using connect) it didn't ask me to pick an instance to create an account with and eased me into the idea of the fediverse. As a reddit refugee that only left because of morals, I absolutely felt like a fish out of water but I persisted. Others don't wish to persist with something confusing or different. One one hand, that's fine with me, I don't want to share a platform with people like that anyway. On the other hand, if it's not at least a little popular and easy to swallow for new users, growth will be impacted.

I feel like the default view should be "All".
Also it would be nice to be able to view "All" for a community that shares the same name across all federated instances.
-
You can make an account without an email still but it's obscured very well.

The sign up requirements are that you have to open with "uh saw duuuu"
-
Well, you seem to be right. The website's points (especially some) are very exaggerated upon a closer look.
That also does make me doubt how true it actually is. But as you said, that open source one is real. So I guess I'll just revert my view to how it was before. Noone is perfect after all. -
they should really only suggest lemmee or shitjustworks, not a fan of any that block stuff like piracy

Let's discuss how to efficiently promote Lemmy to potential new joiners - Lemmy
To follow-up on the Reddit thread [https://feddit.org/post/7074664] yesterday, here are a few elements that can be interesting to discuss. #### Link to specific instances and apps rather than just saying Lemmy Just quoting “Lemmy” or pointing to join-lemmy.org [http://join-lemmy.org] can lead to a very unintuitive and clunky experience, as people can just end up randomly on a very small and/or outdated instance. Recent post by a new joiner 9 days ago, they had to change server 2 times to get a satisfying experience: https://lemmy.world/post/24220536 [https://lemmy.world/post/24220536]. Using something like “Lemmy has 42k monthly active users - https://discuss.online/ [https://discuss.online/] if you want a server located in the USA (content is still accessible from any server, the most difference latency) - https://sopuli.xyz/ [https://sopuli.xyz/] if you want a server located in the EU - https://vger.app/ [https://vger.app/] if you want an app Feel free if you have any questions” Can already point them in one direction, and avoid them getting lost in the too many options. If people want to debate the choice of those two instances, I’ll add my thought process in the comments. #### The Lemmy feed looks as depressing as Reddit’s All, and how to mitigate that Some feedback I received when promoting Lemmy the way above > Just checked out lemmy to see if it’s different from reddit. Im very disappointed lmao. > First post I see is a comic about cultural appropriation with an ifunny watermark. Next are several posts about the proton vpn ceo “going full maga.” And finally a post I saw on Reddit days ago that is ragebait making fun of the cybertruck. > Yikes. It’s the same exact thing. – > Lemmy still has a pretty obnoxious tankie problem. Even if you block the .ml instance, pretty much every thread about US politics or world news on any major instance gets hijacked by the same handful of trolls and their associated vote bots. Hopefully this will become less of a problem as more sane people join, but just as a word of caution, be aware that you will be called western imperialist scum by a bunch of 14 year olds. – > Lemmy is utter rubbish, it’s as if their entire userbase consists of the top layer of scum carefully siphoned off from the Reddit cesspool. It got the worst of the annoying political echo chamber and “very smart” argumentative users from Reddit. > I just clicked on half a dozen random Lemmy servers, and all of them had at least one link about Trump in the top 5 posts. Even ones that seem like they’re supposed to be about tech. > Normal humans want the Reddit of 10+ years ago back. We don’t want to use a different site colonized by the same modern day Redditors we loathe interacting with. – To be fair, you can’t say they’re wrong. Open https://discuss.online/ [https://discuss.online/] , by default you’ll be set on All - Active. Out of the first 9 posts you see, 8 are about T or M, the last one being a meme. What I try to do in such instances is to give something like “While politics are important, you can still very much block them. Here are an example of some communities that can interest you: - https://discuss.online/c/ [/c/] [https://discuss.online/c/] - https://discuss.online/c/ [/c/] [https://discuss.online/c/] - https://discuss.online/c/ [/c/] [https://discuss.online/c/] - https://discuss.online/c/ [/c/] [https://discuss.online/c/] - https://discuss.online/post/15026558 [https://discuss.online/post/15026558] for 20 non-political communities” I also wrote a long post about that issue that you can read here https://old.reddit.com/r/RedditAlternatives/comments/1fmuk7o/post_to_address_the_usual_criticism_about_lemmy/ [https://old.reddit.com/r/RedditAlternatives/comments/1fmuk7o/post_to_address_the_usual_criticism_about_lemmy/] As a side note, I recently started a discussion on [/c/] [https://lemm.ee/c/fedigrow] about a potential political-free instance for new joiners, feel free to have a look: https://feddit.org/post/6819084 [https://feddit.org/post/6819084] #### Lemmy is too small, 42k monthly active users is nothing Discuit, the centralized alternative to Reddit, currently counts 181 weekly active commenters: https://discuit.net/DiscuitMeta/post/NlAdOWAp [https://discuit.net/DiscuitMeta/post/NlAdOWAp] You can also mention that NodeBB is now federating with Lemmy: - https://feddit.org/post/7035166?scrollToComments=true [https://feddit.org/post/7035166?scrollToComments=true] - https://community.nodebb.org/topic/71fe3f89-361c-4716-a79e-de02f94b3113/test-from-lemmy-to-nodebb [https://community.nodebb.org/topic/71fe3f89-361c-4716-a79e-de02f94b3113/test-from-lemmy-to-nodebb] That’s all for now, happy to discuss in the comments. Note: if you’re not interested in promoting Lemmy, feel free to hide this post, you are able to do this on specific posts if your instance is running 0.19.4 and newer
