@atax1a honestly part of it was that Microsoft were cooking some neat ideas back then. Yeah, the underlying motivation for doing some of them was to tie you to Windows, but that doesn’t mean they weren’t fundamentally good ideas
For example: DirectPlay based multiplayer games could register themselves with the OS, and then they would show up in many places including MSN Messenger, where you could just go and invite your friend to play a game of e.g. Total Annihilation.
