Periodic reminder:
Pennecillin became available in 1942.
The first successful organ transplant in 1954.
The first antiviral drug became available in 1963.
Modern anesthesia became available in 1980.
Extreme poverty has declined to about 10% of the global population in 2015, from more than 30% in 1990.Not everything in the modern era has been bad.
We have to figure out how to do this without wrecking the planet though.

@aredridel @inthehands Any time before 1980, I would not have survived being born.
Which makes anyone pretending that everything was better in the past hard to take seriously.

@michael_w_busch @inthehands Indeed. The local and personal vs the global, though, are getting really interesting to weigh. Poverty is at a low. Ecologies are at tipping points. Medicine is all but monotonic improvement. Human sentiment about their condition, not so much.
