Based on new data, I've changed my mind about the belief that "People don't change their minds based on new data."
My previous belief was based on the great research on the "backfire effect," done by Brendan Nyhan in 2010. But in 2020, Brendan did new research, showing that he was wrong about people not changing their minds.
https://www.pnas.org/doi/10.1073/pnas.1912440117He showed that presenting the right data the right way, does cause people to change their minds. This was the right data and way for me.

He also showed that this moderate "corrective effect" eroded over time if less accurate information was repeated by media personalities that share or promote their group identity.
Eg you can change people's mind about police racism in the US. But if those people view themselves as Trump supporters, and Trump continues to repeat untrue statements about Black people, then over time, those people return to their previous, non-fact based beliefs.
Same with Biden supporters and police racism.

He suggests that effecting durable truth is less about "show them facts vs appeal to their feelings," and more about "What lies are the champions of their group identity telling?"
The more I think about it, the more this tracks with my experience.
Me: "I don't know what a racial equity moment is. I was Black last year. I'm going to be Black next year."
Other Black dude: "Yep. By next year they will have forgotten George Floyd and be back to doing how they do. We have to get it in now."

@mekkaokereke certainly, but how do we use that to change minds?

@kellogh @mekkaokereke As a direct fallout of the quotes: tell them the truth and then stop leaders of their group identity from telling lies. How to do THAT on the other hand.....

@kilpatds @mekkaokereke i feel like the more weβve tried to do that with Trump/Vance, the worse itβs gotten. At this point theyβve got a whole army to produce disinformation about things even they hadnβt thought of yet

@kellogh @kilpatds @mekkaokereke which I think shows that steps taken are effective. They needs lots and lots of people to maintain their lies. Which is expensive.
If we can then harm their sources of funds (which is happening), then slowly their ability to steer conversation will dissolve.
Everything takes time and that sucks obviously.
