According to the guide posted in November 2023, the trigger for a mandatory judicial recount request to be filed is quite low.
In a riding with 25,000 votes cast for example, the threshold would be a difference of less than 25,000/500 = 50.
p. 51
“In the event of a tie vote, or if the difference between the first two candidates is less than 1/500 of the total ballots considered, the District Electoral Officer must make an application for a judicial recount. An application must be made within six days after the declaration of official results following the conclusion of final count.”https://elections.bc.ca/docs/8008790_Guide-to-Voting-and-Counting.pdf

@chris I think you are right Chris that they are counted last. From what I've read it will be October 26th/27th before all the results will be available in nail-biter ridings like mine - North Island.

@chris Any theories of what sort of people would have voted from out of riding? University students? Military?

Here is a chart of the close ridings that is the reason we are not called yet. 6 very close ridings. 2 under 50 votes separating. Ridings that are under 50 are likely to be a automatic recount. #bcpoli #bcelxn2024

@chris If I understand correctly, the table on p. 44 of the Guide to Voting and Counting gives the categories of votes that are only in the final count (which seems to be everything but what is in the preliminary results table on p. 42) https://elections.bc.ca/docs/8008790_Guide-to-Voting-and-Counting.pdf#page=48

95.5% polls reporting and same results 2M votes counted! I think we might have another coalition gov if this holds but with the Greens losing their leader's seat who knows!? #bcpoli #bcelxn2024

@chris The thing I most detest about elections is that it makes me hate 3/4 of the population - those who didn't vote, and those who voted conservative.
-
@chris I really wish we had ranked voting. So much vote splitting with the Greens going on

@chris If we can’t get proportional representation then a minority govt w Greens holding the balance is, imho, the best outcome for BC citizens.

@jpthuot03 totally

@dx i really wish the BC Liberals hadn't sabotaged Proportional Representation 20 years ago. The majority wanted and voted for it. We wouldn't be having this discussion.

The votes are coming in but really really slowly. Apparently this is the process of counting the outside ballots by hand. We just got over 96% #bcpoli #bcelxn2024

Automatic judicial recount is done when the difference is less than 1/500. Anything under 300 will likely request a recount and probably get it even if they have to pay for it.
