Big news is leader of Greens has lost her race. Talking now. She tried to switch ridings and it disnt work out, it is always hard to do. Sad she lost but it is a win for NDP and might be the difference #bcpoli #bcelxn2024

nearly 90% of polls reporting. There are a bunch of VERY tight races within 10s of votes. it is 46-45 for CPBC #bcpoli #bcelxn2024

Do you happen to know the current threshold for automatic judicial recounts in BC elections? It would seem that there could be several.
Especially keeping in mind that the last reported polls are often close ones where there may be a recount by the deputy returning officer and poll clerk even before the papers are signed and filed.

Flipped back to NDP. NDP has not relinquished the popular vote all night but it is incredibly tight. We are at 54% turnout with 91% of polls reporting. 2nd image is of previous election in 2020. NDP has a higher popular vote today and overall turnout then was 54.5% so we will likely beat that. #bcpoli #bcelxn2024

We just went over the turnout from last election 54.5%. We are now at 54.9% So that is positive. But still no call. Too many close races. NDP currently ahead with 46 seats to 45 with 92% polls reporting. #bcpoli #bcelxn2024

@chris I’m going to watch something a little less stressful until it’s all over, like the first 20 minutes of Saving Private Ryan.

@chris I’ll see if I can track that down.
I don’t live in BC now so I assume it’s changed but 10s of votes difference usually gets you an automatic recount in Canada.

so the results have kind of stalled at 93% and I think I understand why. All the ridings still say "Out of District Ballots : In Progress"
This is new for this election. People (like me) could vote in any place across the province. Those votes are counted last.
edit: *from what I have heard - not sure*

According to the guide posted in November 2023, the trigger for a mandatory judicial recount request to be filed is quite low.
In a riding with 25,000 votes cast for example, the threshold would be a difference of less than 25,000/500 = 50.
p. 51
“In the event of a tie vote, or if the difference between the first two candidates is less than 1/500 of the total ballots considered, the District Electoral Officer must make an application for a judicial recount. An application must be made within six days after the declaration of official results following the conclusion of final count.”https://elections.bc.ca/docs/8008790_Guide-to-Voting-and-Counting.pdf

@chris I think you are right Chris that they are counted last. From what I've read it will be October 26th/27th before all the results will be available in nail-biter ridings like mine - North Island.

@chris Any theories of what sort of people would have voted from out of riding? University students? Military?
