"why do you have two words for castle?" said the woman whose L1 has five words for "village"

@yoavzack
shit you're right.
I went on Wikipedia to check what's the formal difference and was immediately reminded there's also ארמון and מבצר.
though to be fair, there's still more distinctions in Czech.
he ארמון = cs palác
he מבצר = he מצודה = cs citadela
he טירה but on a mountain = cs hrad
he טירה but not on a mountain = cs zámek -

@Yuvalne hey but they have unique meanings
עיר - Ir, city
עיירה - Ayara, town
כפר - Arab village
ישוב - Yeshuv, Jewish village
מושב - Moshav, Jewish agricultural village
מושבה - Moshava, idk what this one means actually
קיבוץ - Kibbutz, communist villageAnd yes Hebrew distinguishes based on them being Jewish, Arab, or the fifth Abrahamic religion, communism.
(Ik you know this but I'm going to boost this one day lmao)

@laxla you forgot קבוצה which is the same as קיבוץ but founded before 1920.
as for מושבה, it's essentially a village that hasn't decided which of the others it wants to be yet. a teenage-phase ישוב if you will. -

@laxla it's what קיבוץ was during the second Aliyah. like קבוצת כינרת and קבוצת דגניה.

@Yuvalne honestly I'd just call this pretransition, not an entirely separate word

@Yuvalne it's like pretending גרב and גרב are different words because of the different genders.
Oh wait you're right, it is funny

@burnoutqueen @Alon @Yuvalne no I'm just laughing at your inability to not reply when seeing "communism" in local feed /lh
