Honest question.

Perceived value is bullshit and can be whatever the investors want it to be.
-
Not all tech companies are monsters. Certainly many are.
One of the things that differentiates them is transparency. The fact that Bluesky's ownership picture is not clear should be very troubling.

My comment was based on the current state and philosophies of several of the largest tech companies in the world. We are buried under bad tech actors.

If someone put in $15M and got 10% of the company, the 'book' value becomes $150M. If they got 33%, it's $45M. That's how valuation is established.
Of course, you are right, if someone comes along and offers $50M for 20%, that reestablishes the valuation at $250M.
Since the company has zero revenue, this all begs the question of what are people buying for their millions? Which is another reason ownership matters.
-
Indeed we are. Completely agree.

Zero revenue + bleeding money and Jay not getting paid. That last round of investment looks like payroll to me

Would agree, and this also makes them vulnerable.
Edit: Figure at 10 employees plus a hundred "contract moderators" and server costs, they are burning about $1M per month minimum. That $15M won't last long.

Yes. Very. It is the reason for the dog and pony show tour she did last year visiting all of the news organizations. They must make this look like a real profit center to as many people as possible as quickly as possible.

One other thing, IMO, Crypto will be an integral part of it all. They are just waiting for the support of the new administration.
-
@noondlyt @lupus_blackfur @joeinwynnewood
Right, but without a credible path to profitability it just becomes another information space marginalization play.
Which is why people need to wake the f- up. ️
-
@noondlyt @lupus_blackfur @joeinwynnewood
Yup, interesting thought. Maybe they can pay their popular posters in crypto BS coin.
-
Now that's even more confusing. What's the difference between "investors" and "venture capital firms"? Are there more equity owners that we should know about?
And how come they say it is owned by Jay and the employees if there are all these investors and VC firms involved.
Distinguishing between "funding for operations" and what else? This is nonsense.
Just spitting out word salad doesn't answer the basic question and makes it seem they are trying to obfuscate things?

@mastodonmigration This entire discussion makes me appreciate the fact that a decentralized platform like Mastodon exists and that I’m fortunate to be on here with y’all.

@mastodonmigration In what way are they 'our' social media platforms?
-
@mastodonmigration I have been looking for an alternative to Facebook because of Zuckerberg’s support for Trump. Tired of the dread of stupidity that is selling out the American exceptionalism and Democratic values in the name of patriotism and religion.
-
Welcome. Hope you like Mastodon. Mastodon is something very different from Facebook. There is no algorithm, so the posts you see will only be from folks you follow. It takes some getting used to, but being in control of your feeds is actually one of the biggest benefits from open social media. No one is trying to manipulate you or sell you anything. And, no corporation is watching you and sucking up all your data to profile you.
For some ideas on who to follow @FediFollows

In the sense that you invest your time and effort on them and build a social network of friends and followers.
But you make a good point. When you do so on a corporate network all your interactions and data become their property. That is not the case for open publicly funded social platforms like Mastodon, which truly are 'our platforms'.

@bob @mastodonmigration I’m a full believer in the Fediverse. I’m still trying to find ways to convince other friends that this is the way. Like truly free and democratic Internet.
I also wish that creating servers (instances) and connections to independent blogs (like WordPress, and so on) would become more accessible or user friendly.
