I decided to (hastily, probably clumsily, definitely verbosely) put down all of my thoughts on the Matt Mullenweg/WP Engine fiasco.
In short: I believe it's in the best interest of #wordpress that Matt's powers be severely curtailed, if not entirely removed.

No mention of WPengine now being owned by venture capitalists.No mention of the fact Matt has been trying to get them to contribute more for several years -- just echoing WPengine's accusation that this was sudden.
Mentioned the money, but not the fact they could also have contributed 8% of revenue as developer hours.
I think that's a flawed one sided post Josh.

@adrinux @collinsworth @ajsadauskas I can’t speak for the author, but:
1. Automattic has also taken venture capital. I assume here you are echoing Mullenweg’s argument that WP Engine’s capitalists are bad, as opposed to his capitalists, who are good (see https://ma.tt/2024/09/are-investors-bad/).
2. They aren’t required by the license to contribute more. You can argue they should anyway, I guess. You can also argue that if that’s what Matt wanted he should have licensed the software differently.
3. Are other companies in the WP ecosystem now expected to pay 8% of their revenue to Automattic? Which ones? What’s the new rule? Matt’s not saying.

What does being owned by venture capital have to do with this? Does that give others the right to go after them?
Look man, *should* WP Engine be contributing more? Yes. But that's not a legal requirement. Doesn't matter how long Matt has been trying to encourage them to do so... they don't *have* to. There's no law against being greedy. In fact our market system incentivizes it.
Matt doesn't like that moral obligation isn't enough.

"Go after them"? WPengine set the lawyers loose.And are you really so ignorant of how many companies VC has been destroying in the last few years?
Your welcome to defend greed...but you'll never find me agreeing with that or taking the side of the greedy.

@adrinux @syntaxseed @collinsworth @ajsadauskas You know that Automattic has taken venture capital money too, right?
Matt's argument here is that WP Engine's capitalists are bad, unlike his capitalists, who are good. That's not me putting words in his mouth. He said it on his blog.
