So, kbin.social (and likely #kbin itself) is dead.

And yes, I know there's #mbin
1. I'm talking about instances here, not platforms
2. Word is that mbin's lead dev is supporting lunduke who's known for transphobia (see lemmy comments here: https://lemmy.ml/post/18935315/12861600)The situation may be more nuanced than that or incomplete, but it's there.

Regarding:
"Why hasn't the fediverse grown more? Instances & immobile accounts!?"That is part of it, I think.
But, (in addition to that) I suspect typical people want influencers.
But (big) influencers tend to make a living from their influencing activities. And if people don't want ads, then at the very least payments need to be in place (to get them to come here and stay here).
(I.e., the Fediverse would need payments to be part of the protocol.)

Yea. As the founder of hachyderm put it, the world runs on money, so even if you don’t want to, you’ve got to interface with it somehow.
Still, I think plenty more pseudo/quasi influencer types would have ended up here if basic UX and the defensive culture around it were better.

@maegul There is this: https://wedistribute.org/2024/03/activitypub-nomadic-identity/
But, there are a lot of buts... welcome to the wild west.

Yep. And part of why I’m somewhat forceful in my statement is that same person tried to get nomadic identity into ActivityPub ages ago and was pushed back. See https://medium.com/we-distribute/got-zot-mike-macgirvin-45287601ff19
It really seems like it was relegated to “nice to have” too long. Which I think we can all understand, but by the same token clearly reflects a developer’s biases around what is and isn’t acceptable UX.

That is a good point — (even if some of it has improved) a lot of the UX on the Fediverse is (still) poor.
The (poor) on-boarding UX is probably one of the first ones new comers (to the Fediverse) hit.

Personally, I'm still bitter about my on-boarding experience. I put work into picking a server based on the superficial information available, which was often frustratingly superficial for many instances.
Then realised I didn't understand the system that much at all once I joined, then found an instance I liked (this), migrated, which worked well for the most part but still had some notable pain points, and I'm still bummed my old posts etc were left behind.

@maegul
Many people will fight tooth and nail before they have to interface with money on Fediverse, which is asinine to me -
@maegul mobile (aka "nomadic") identity is supported by AcitivtyPub protocol. But not many projects tried to actually implement it: https://codeberg.org/fediverse/fep/src/branch/main/fep/ef61/fep-ef61.md
-
My understanding is that that’s new-ish, so it’ll take time and commitment.
Also, the nature of the fediverse is that being in the protocol doesn’t mean anything really. The actual protocol is what a critical mass of platforms implement consistently. With mastodon’s dominance, that basically means it’s whatever mastodon does.
That each platform has to implement protocol compatibility on its own necessitates this.
-
@maegul FEP-ef61 is compatible with Mastodon, it doesn't create a separate network like alternative protocols do. Connection only breaks when data is moved from the original server to another one, but that's not different from what we have now. Within the sub-network of FEP-ef61 implementations, users can enjoy persistent identities.

@maegul take it easy. I just watch lunduke videos. I'm not supporting him anymore.
I'm literally gay myself. I'm supporting the LGBT community including trans.

All good. To be clear, if you care about what others are saying or thinking about this, you might be interested in saying something more public. As I heard this from others talking about it, who might be inclined to make something of it (though I have no idea if that’s true).
