Laptops from System76 and Framework are always advertising that they work well with Linux, but that's NOTHING compared to this.
-
they still left personal info on it, though.
I KNOW ABOUT YOUR SPANISH BAND'S CD RELEASE!
-
This is a brother Personal Digital Notebook.
A very dirty one that's missing most of the screws. -
Inside.
It's a GeoBook 10.4" Color! -
So this was a computer designed for people who just needed something cheap to do word processing and the like. The details on the specs are rare, but apparently it has 5 megabyte of ROM, 4 megabyte of RAM, and 1 megabyte of flash storage.
Since this is the NB-80C, it's got a 10.4" 640x480 color LCD. (the NB-60 has a 9.4" 640x480 greyscale LCD) -
IT LIVES!
-
Yeah here's our main menu. The obvious office stuff, internet, file manager, preferences, calculator.
-
hey look, the file manager says there's a command.com on the F:\
Does that mean this is just running on top of DOS?
-
Yep it sure is.
-
made a DOS 6.22 bootdisk. Let's see if it'll boot that.
-
nope. it doesn't seem to boot off floppies.
But I was able to use the command.com from it to finally check the memory. Yep, 4mb.
-
I ran some tests. System Information says it's a 33mhz 386SX.
-
GEOS's mouse config says you can switch to an external serial mouse.
also look at these lovely GUI markers. vaguely CDE?
-
the first serial mouse I plug in appears to have dead horizontal tracking. god damn it.

@foone oh, bother
-
@foone Gotta ask... how is that a mouse? As in, where are the left and right mouse buttons? Also, it just looks downright uncomfortable to use...
-
@kbkarma it's very uncomfortable to use! and the buttons are his eyebrows

@foone how does a PS/2 mouse know a Serial adapter has been plugged in? Do they put a Serial signal into an otherwise unused pin?
-
@foone I think it might just barely be able to run Doom. Minimum requirements are 4mb 386
-
okay I got it working with a much more boring mouse.
once @gewt gets out of her meeting I'll try doing dialup with it.
