Selling out
-
I feel great right now. But I am concerned I may have to make a choice between providing for my family or making excellent software for lockheed martin at some time in the future. My price is my family's well being and that isn't really a secret.

Okay? Good for you, you are a somewhat less principled person than some others. Not sure what you're arguing about.
-
I'm not arguing with you yet, because the only thing you have done is ask me a troll question. All I know is that you don't like what I have said, but you are too much of a coward to state your own position.

Remember, you are just a cog in a machine, it just happens to be a death machine.

I try to stay practical about it. A screwdriver manufacturer is not an arms dealer. But if your work only has value in the violent world of war, then I think it’s worth asking yourself if you’re comfortable with that. I don’t always disparage people that are, even though I certainly couldn’t stomach it.
My rule of thumb is to ask whether the defense industry is the only customer for the product. The company I work for does sell some to defense, but the products were not designed with defense as the primary purpose. It still doesn’t feel great to me, but I’m finding it increasingly difficult to avoid defense funding nowadays.

No, I moved on. The money was amazing though.

I thought I stated my opinion pretty clearly. I can do it again for you. It is disingenuous to say that everyone has a price, that's just something people say to make themselves feel better. Everyone needs to look at themselves and their principles and make a decision based on their beliefs and their situation. But saying "if I didn't someone else would, anyone would do the same, everyone has a price etc..." is a cop-out.
-
So would it be better to say that most people have a price?
-
Sure? But kind of a weird interjection to make at someone saying that they don't.
-
Yeah, I can see that. I sometimes think people don't have a sufficient imagination when it comes to what the cost could be, or they don't think some of the horrible stuff could be possible. So I was giving some push back.
I think we need to think about these things because I think we are rapidly heading to a darker place.
I don't think we can rely on there being a large amount of people like you to take all the hits. I think we need to find a way to share the work amongst everyone to get to a better place. So I think having the expectation that everyone works against their most deeply held interests like family is one that will make us weaker as a whole.

On the one hand I agree with you, it's not hard. On the other hand if everyone had principles, it might be hard to find a job.
