Why would you divide a bar spiral galaxy into quadrants?

Why would you divide a bar spiral galaxy into quadrants? Doesn't individual spiral arms plus maybe a central core make more sense?

@JeremyMallin 1) A spiral coordinate system sounds like a nightmare to me,
2) quadrants give a better indication of what can be reached in a given amount of time, 3) I don't think the quadrants are actually geometric quarters, rather regions of relative political homogeneity. -

1) and 3a) I don't think @JeremyMallin was talking about a coordinate system but more of a conceptual partitioning.
2) Even at warp speeds I'd expect a patchwork of local coordinates. The galaxy is much too big for using the central SMBH as a reference if you live one third of the way out.
3b) There are actual geometrical quarters... based on our Sun. The jokes write themselves.

@angelastella @JeremyMallin Yes, there are actual quarters if you choose to use them. But for example the city of #Manchester in the UK has quarters, for example the Northern Quarter and the Medieval Quarter, but they are regions of different character, not geometrical quarters. This is the sense of 'quarter' I get from #StarTrek.
