@boardgamer Obviously we will have to wait and see. Meanwhile, I continue to think that the real danger looming in front of us does not come from the Democratic party — not at all — but from the other party that is now an overt engine of overt fascism.

@wdlindsy It's not a game. The DNC leadership MUST take responsibility for their part in this horrific failure. Otherwise, they will continue to lose. I am hardly alone in this assessment.

William Lindsey :toad:replied to Colin from Edinburgh last edited by
@photoncollector And the Republican party is, as we both know very well, deeply committed to addressing poverty and assisting those living on the economic margins of society. Their tax policies alone tell us this, right?

William Lindsey :toad:replied to FIAR Light last edited by
@LightFIAR Just as the corporate media are telling us loudly right now — as they keep saying each time the Democrats lose, since their primary objective is to normalize what the Republican party is doing. I refuse to assist the media in that objective.

@wdlindsy Then you're seriously part of the problem. If you think the DNC/neolib Dems are fine and dandy? You're as delusional as the idiots who thought voting for Trump was a good idea.

It is much worse than that.
Chump will put high tariffs on Chinese and Indian goods, they will retaliate with high tariffs on US foods, which will cause grocery prices to drop precipitously for a short while as China will be buying less from the US, which will put a lot of US farms out of business, causing massive food shortages in the US... Couple that with the cost of hiring people to pick your lettuce when migrants are gone will lead to the highest grocery costs in US history. -

@nikatjef Paul Krugman's entire article iw well worth a read. And, yes, tariffs will drive up prices, very definitely.

I couldn't agree more with Stephanie G. Wilson:
"I’m not going to give any hot takes about the campaign, what it did wrong, or any particular tactics. … I don’t think small fixes would have made a difference. In this campaign, as in all of our country’s issues, we can’t fix systemic problems with individual solutions. A lot of that monday morning quarterbacking is self serving, and a lot of it can be a circular firing squad. No thank you."
How to keep functioning and getting out of bed every morning.

@wdlindsy I appreciate this survey of the tragic results of last week's elections. Can it be just a week ago, that so many democratic and Democratic hopes were dashed against the cliff of No Restraint? It's now been nine years of relentless effort to rid ourselves of the Trump-led mayhem. Lady Liberty, alone, may know what darkness lies ahead for us. She ain't talkin'.

"What I was trying to say to Trump’s opponents and Trump’s critics is that it’s not just that he was at a real risk of winning, which I thought for a long time, but also that he is very likely to move very, very rapidly to create new facts on the ground while his opponents are just busy fighting with each other over their ideological priors."

"My husband and I were correspondents [in Russia] in the first few years of Putin’s term, and Putin moved with extraordinary speed and focus to dismantle the fledgling institutions of Russian democracy. That has been the template and the playbook for other would-be authoritarians who are working within a democratic system."

"I will not spend a lot of time here blaming whoever caused this tremendous loss. People everywhere are already doing that.
Assigning blame is useless unless viable solutions are offered and implemented.
That said, here are my top three reasons why we lost the election:"

Russia has been engaged in a whole bunch of dick-wagging since Trump won the election. That's likely because the last time they helped Trump get elected, he deferred on and then failed to deliver his side of the bargain.

"Russia appears to be doing what every other entity that helped Trump get elected is doing, as they try to collect on their support: exerting what levers of pressure they have to get their objectives.
It turns out they likely have more levers of pressure — some of which are more powerful now, before Trump’s win is certified — and larger demands than most of the people who helped Trump get elected."

@wdlindsy It was astounding how long people normalised his reign. I well remember the basement of the then Theatre Museum with Vanessa Redgrave and the likes of Litvinenko talking around a documentary about the truth behind the Moscow apartment bombing to trigger the Second Chechen War. Then Politkovskaya's assassination. And people would say, 'you haven't been back to research since 2000, whyever not?'
