No more tents in California, the governor and my mayor says. So they just threw people’s tents away so now people are just on the streets with no shelter, their stuff everywhere. Everywhere, people applaud this for being ‘tough on homelessness’, as if being poor is the crime. Institutional neglect and lack of housing, treating poor people this way should be the crime
-
Lots of people who cheer this stuff say, ‘oh but it’s their fault for..’
Nope, it isn’t. Stop it.
Have you looked up the number of shelters available, vs the number of people who need help? Have you looked up the utterly inhumane ways in which we ‘offer’ help, then punish people for not accepting this (terrible) help?

@skinnylatte
How awful would a shelter have to be for someone to decide sleeping in a tent in an alleyway or under a bridge or whatever is better than sleeping inside? If you want people to stop sleeping outside, make inside free, available, and better than a tent. -
@skinnylatte It's like finding someone bleeding on the sidewalk and charging them with littering
-
Big "did you ever try just not being poor?" energy in these policies.
-
@skinnylatte it’s really fucked up that this is happening but it’s more of a problem in the urban, affluent parts of California. When I lived in the san joaquin county the authorities looked the other way about homeless encampment by the river, they still do. Where I’m living now in NorCal the homeless are an issue and concern but people are compassionate about it and trying to work out solutions.

@JessTheUnstill @skinnylatte
Everything ubder the sun except housing first, the one thing that actually works -
@clint I think the big cities are just ahead of where you are. Because the Supreme Court ruling just passed to enable this, and the story is now ‘let’s just throw it all away’
Not saying there isn’t real compassion in parts of NorCal but Newsom is also threatening local officials who aren’t doing this
-
@skinnylatte doesn’t this just make it more visible and worse for everyone. Counter intuitive to do this. Magical thinking is exactly that.
-
@dialogcrm yep, but they don’t care
