I just realized what I hate about modern chat: it's not a small window on the screen anymore, it's *the whole screen*.

Discord (et al) is barely usable in a small window, whereas AOL Instant Messenger was *very* usable in a small window as you went about your browsing.
For me, smaller window = fewer distractions.

@vkc MSN Messenger with buzz feature, though.
Ah, good old days.
(Also, the Discord UX is generally terrible in my opinion, so there is that)

@vkc And because everything's built with Electron or some other web platform, you can't even have the ability to split out the contact/server list, or individual chats anymore in these official programs.
If I didn't need access to moderation tools, or bot commands, I'd love to just go back to using Bitlbee or whatever for Discord...

@mahryekuh @vkc ok so, i found this really cool app called aerochat, it literally uses msn messenger 09 as a discord client

@vkc I have kind of the opposite problem in many cases now: I have older eyes & I use my computer from a recliner. Even w/ a 55 inch TV I need larger fonts to read; never mind things like discord emotes, which for me are all way too small to see clearly!
I used to use all the old IM's but I'm not sure how well I'd do w/ them now, unfortunately.

@ashortbusvet @vkc This!! All these comments about design and typography, about the hardware 30 years ago.
You all got older! Your eyesight isn't as good! Your cognitive abilities have declined a bit. The *wetware* got worse.
Young people manage fine with Discord UI.
The big take home here is that accessibility matters for everyone. A second is that design is aimed at an audience.

@adrinux It’s 2024, we should have the option for both! Full screen and a little pop-out window! I’m sure we used to make better use of the space we had @ashortbusvet @vkc

@andycarolan @ashortbusvet @vkc I'm sure a few design & UI tweaks could help in some apps, yes.
But I tried the rebuilt desktop matrix client Fractal (on Gnome, on Linux) last week. They haven't implemented a way to change font size yet (that I can see), and the type is too small for me to read comfortably.
It's not unreasonably small. Probably about the same as mastodon on my phone -- but I have my specs off and the phone 20cm from my face, can't do that with a 27inch monitor =D

@adrinux I don't really understand why everything doesn't have font size control options now. We have such a wide range of display sizes.
One that I think fails spectacularly almost every time are third party Nintendo Switch games. Sure, in game text may be visible on a tv, but try playing it handheld lol. @ashortbusvet @vkc
