HOWEVER I completely 100% understand why folks would choose bluesky over the fedi, there's so many good reasons to go there (your mates are there, it's easier to use, they actually have reply controls and shit), and very few reasons, in comparison, to come here (it's volunteer-run, so what? most folks don't care about that, and it doesn't mean much if those volunteers are pedantic, racist reply guys); I don't begrudge anyone choosing to move their social media lives to bluesky over here, it makes total sense
maybe if mastodon--the software that is the fediverse in most people's eyes--had spent the last few years working on reply controls and safety stuff, reply fetching, debugging federation issues, and providing better ways of rooting out racist shitheads, it could present a viable alternative to another vc-backed centralized platform -- but it didn't, so it can't. The fact that it tried to style itself as a direct replacement for corpo socials for so long is a bit embarrassing at this point, because it's not a fight it could ever win and so it's not a battle it should have chosen. But it is what it is!
at this point, i'm much more interested in the possibilities afforded by clusters of allowlist-only instances that lean hard into the federated nature of the software rather than trying to paper over it; i think the "world's town square" approach to social media is not really something that interests me anymore (and it never did, really...); so I think the best thing that "THE FEDI" could do would be to basically die off or completely mutate into something much weirder and more interesting, and i'm all for that
