Two pairs of supposedly good quality, branded shorts, and both failed in the um... crotch area, around the same time.

@OtherRyn I do try to buy natural fibre where I can, and yes... everything is thinner now.

@andycarolan I started sewing my own clothing because I am not proportioned like industry standard and I got tired of living in stretchy clothing. That it means I can choose the weight of the fabric has been an unplanned benefit.
And I fully admit that this is not a solution that everyone can opt for. This was just the most reasonable option for my circumstances.
I wish you all the luck in finding something that's going to last!

@OtherRyn Ooh, that's a good idea. Sadly, I'm not blessed with sewing skills. Perhaps I should look into that.
Must be awesome to be able to choose the fit, fabric and style of your own clothes. Often ‘off the peg' is a compromise anyway.

@andycarolan The great thing is that there are SO many excellent tutorials for free and pay out there. And there's a good chance that a charity shop will have a starter sewing machine.
It is SO wonderful to learn the skills to grade patterns to fit me in the ways that make me feel the best. And, as a person that likes wearing dresses, being able to put in pockets that aren't for mice is so freaking great.
Should you decide to get your feet wet, I'm happy to help with links and cheering you on!

@OtherRyn I will see what's around... might be a fun project!
The only patterns I currently have a Cosplay ones lol.
Thanks, I would appreciate a link or two, just to see the types of things that are available as far as pattens go! Generally, I'm a shorts and tshirt kind of person lol.

@andycarolan If you want to continue being a shorts and t-shirt kind of person, that's definitely doable. Here's a quick find for a men's short pattern that's also got a trouser pattern, so double duty https://threadtheory.ca/collections/sewing-patterns/products/jedediah-pants-pdf
Here's a hoodie from the same folks https://threadtheory.ca/collections/mens-patterns/products/finlayson-sweater-pdf
And a henley https://threadtheory.ca/products/strathcona-henley-pdf
There are loads of other pattern designers out there, but these are all print at home or print at A0 copyshop.

@andycarolan There's also a website that is in beta - https://threadloop.app that's free to use (paid levels available) to see what patterns are available, what weight fabric is suggested, etc.

@OtherRyn Oh wow, I never realised this was a thing! Those shorts look especially good! Thanks for those.
Also, I forgot to respond to your line about pockets... It always amazes me how dresses etc don't have pockets, or have those stupid fake ones. When my wife finds something with functional pockets, it's like discovering a rare and valuable artefact lol.

@andycarolan Happy to help! Also, there's a massive sewing community on here with everything from new home sewists to professional designers.
I'm just now getting to the point where I feel comfortable making moderate changes to the purchased patterns I have, like making it a side zip instead of a back zip, or changing a gored skirt for a circle skirt. It's really interesting to watch my comfort level improve and my "if it doesn't work, then I've learned how not to do something" grow

@andycarolan Oh! And the other thing I love. I love the sihouette of men's shorts (and the functionality) but sewing them for my body shape will result in sadness. So I can take that shorts pattern and make the adjustments to fit my particular shape. Or apply aspects to a women's shorts pattern.

@OtherRyn That looks interesting too! - Seems to be quite a community.

@OtherRyn I imagine it's a skill that as a society, we have lost.
It's awesome that you can adjust patterns to fit your own preferences too. We aren't all made the same afterall. Generalised sizes make zero sense.

@OtherRyn Mens shorts are awesome... soooooo many pockets lol.
I was looking at a brand earlier, and they have unisex skater shorts, with lots of pockets... I didn't want to buy them though, purely because they had zips that I would likely scratch my car with when getting in/out of it lol.

@andycarolan I feel this. I buy clothes very slowly now and do a ton of research to try to help with this now. It also means my clothes are very expensive now too. It doesn't help that I'm on the bigger side too.

@HobbieJ Definitely worth spending more on individual items, rather than buying cheap and buying often. Sadly, as I discovered, you can't rely on brands previously considered to be robust.

@andycarolan At least on my end, since I'm big, classic blue-collar, working man's clothes look good on me, and those have stayed "somewhat" quality. I'm rocking Deluth Co. stuff rn.

@HobbieJ I had to Google Deluth Co as we don't have that over here... I don't think. That stuff needs to be pretty tough.
