It is painful to me that I have seen a few big accounts say something to the extent of "why don't the Rust folks make their own kernel." Either they are not aware of Redox OS or they are ruling it out for unknown reasons. I would appreciate elaboration.

@soller Can Redox run Linux software without porting? I think Drew was suggesting to build a kernel that could run Linux software unmodified.
I don’t agree with his take regarding creating a new kernel, though I’m absolutely not qualified to comment on such matters.

@that_leaflet We are working on source compatibility first and have made tremendous progress. The cynical side of me would say that even Linux can't reliably run Linux binaries, unless they are statically compiled and rigorously tested against a wide range of distros - which is quite rare. I've seen Linux games on Steam stop working and have had to switch to the Windows version, usually due to shared library issues.

@soller ngl I thought Redox was a shower gel until today. People not hearing of it just means they’re hearing of it *now* and that can only really be a net positive!

@soller @that_leaflet It's definitely not cynical. I've been burned a couple times by glibc compatibility. A binary compiled on an 18.04 machine may run perfectly on 24.04, but a binary compiled on 24.04 will not be able to run on 18.04. The difference? glibc is not backwards compatible.

@soller RedoxOS doesn’t advertise itself as an aspiring Linux clone. It’s entirely new design, including being a microkernel/user space drivers.
Although the real question is whether the RedoxOS folks actually want an influx of former RustInLinux devs.
