Look peeps, if you have an issue with me helping people to BeAware of certain things they are not aware of, so that they can make informed decisions, then maybe I'm not the person you should follow.

That's okay! I'm not everyone's cup of tea.
However, don't come to my replies and criticize my choice to let others know about certain stuff.
I get it. People have unrealistic expectations in terms of privacy on the internet, but I still feel it's important to make them Aware of things directly on Fediverse that I am aware of.
We cannot change privacy across the entire internet, but maybe we can talk about privacy on Fedi so that those who are developing those awesome softwares can think about how they can possibly integrate more privacy options on Fedi.
Fediverse is in active development. Things are always changing. There may not be much privacy on Fedi now, but there could be if we discuss such things passionately and consistently.

PS. And no, I don't value privacy very much in terms of my public profile and posts. I am wide open.
However, that doesn't mean that I cannot wish that there were better options for those who DO value privacy. That's why I discuss it. Options. If there's MANY options to control your privacy, then everyone can take those options and do with them how they see fit.
Right now, there's not enough options for most to be comfortable, and that's what we should talk about.

@[email protected] I agree and I think people should be made aware of these kinds of things especially if the user themselves can make a change. I also think more tools should be made for privacy. Just wanted to point out that expecting privacy is a bit dumb on the internet as a whole, even with measures taken (but the more swiss cheese slices you add, the better!!)

@BeAware It certainly could be private, but I love the fact that my data isn't being harvested by the platform itself. One time I made a new Facebook account under a fake name to handle so I could use the marketplace and look for cars or something, Facebook suspended my account with a message saying "We have determined that you are using a fake name" and boom, gone without appeal. How they figured that out? No clue, but the point of that platform is to sell YOUR data, not your fake data lol

@exerra Don't worry, this wasn't directed at anyone in particular. There were a few folks going back and forth with me.
At a point though, we all just have to agree to disagree and move on, know what I mean?️

@pixelworld_ai facts....when I signed up for threads, I was immediately banned. Had to submit an appeal.
Sorry/not sorry, but it's been *awhile* since I've used my real name when signing up to stuff like that and I won't be starting now.️

This is terrible. What if i just don't like my legal name? I am prefer to be refereed as "Owl", everyone knows me as Owl.

@lonelyowl @pixelworld_ai facts.
There's 5 people that know my real name that I talk to.
Nobody else needs to know.
I'm BeAware. I look like a flying phoenix holding the words BeAware.

@BeAware .... I lijke the fact you're willing to answer questions. Part of the reason I'm here is to learn and grow...and sometimes that means busting illusions. -T

@the_spc I just value knowledge and being able to use that knowledge how I see fit.
Therefore, I find it important to share that knowledge so others can do the same.
And as you say, even if it means shattering illusions.

@pixelworld_ai @BeAware Well for one they track everything under the sun and get data all over the web. So best guess they got repeated hits that your computer/phone using multiple sites that do have your real name as a confirmed field and used that. Or if you have one of their apps they might've just harvested it directly from the device. Contrary to what they claim, they do listen & browse things without permission. Wife & I made a game out of seeing how fast to pop a ad up on her phone.
