@andypiper FWIW... I really wish someone would put together and idiot's (me) guide to available Fediverse platforms like, mastodon, bookwryn, writefreely, etc. (My list may be inaccurate; it is certainly incomplete.)
-
@ManyRoads thanks for the FWIW - it sounds like that’s something we (the Fediverse community) could do better at.
-
@andypiper Overall, it's a very nice video. I just wish the creator hadn't compared the Fediverse to the United States. There's nothing analogous to the US Federal Government in the Fediverse. Since the USA wouldn't function well without the Federal Government (I'm sure opinions will vary), the point isn't clear to me. Said differently, "federated" can have different meanings in different contexts (nations vs software servers) and I think this video conflated multiple meanings of the word.
-
@steve yes I see what you’re saying here. Initially the metaphor was quite good, but you’re right that there’s no overall governance so that aspect breaks down a bit. Still - I mostly see the hackneyed email metaphor, so this was an interesting alternative way to look at it.
-
@andypiper A better analogy might be the international postal system (snail mail) that is federated and is generally effective without central governance.
-
@steve that's a good point, the international aspect covers the different cultures and rules piece as well. Nice enhancement to the concept.
-
@andypiper pleasantly simple, thanks.
I wonder whether their not mentioning "search" was intentionally omissive. I have tootfinder on my profile, do you have any better suggestion?
TIA

@grahamperrin do you mean for finding things on Mastodon in general?
