funniest story of 2025 so far is how the impending TikTok-ban is causing a migration/exploration of Americans to the Chinese app Rednote, where they're having so much more cultural exchanges than they would have had if TikTok would stay around.

@eilah_tan super fascinating to see this happen
very curious if or what sort of panic this will cause in washington

@laurenshof they'll probably wait for the Supreme Court to make its judgement if it rules against TikTok, it'll most likely also be applicable to ALL other Chinese apps. the same happened in India when it banned TikTok in 2020, it banned another 59 Chinese apps as well

@laurenshof also i wouldn't be surprised if China themselves shut off access for Americans when they start bringing up Chinese human rights violations. the Great Firewall of China exists for a reason!

@eilah_tan yeah good points, its not like douyin is available here haha
now im curious tho why rednote is allowed to have both a chinese as well as international userbase. or if thats just a case of flying under the radar for a while
-
@eilah_tan but damn that kinda means i need to try out rednote quickly, if neither us or chinese gov want this to actually happen the fun probably wont last long

@laurenshof I was thinking the same except I'm not too sure about the data privacy maybe use a burner phone!

@eilah_tan yeah. i do have my previous phone from a few years ago still laying around. not sure if that really qualifies as a burner phone tho regarding data privacy?

A great reading list on Xiaohongshu (the real name for RedNote) was shared earlier by Dr Qian Huang, have a look! https://qianxeniahuang.super.site/resources/xiaohongshu-literature
She also made the appeal to refer to and share the spotlight with those researchers who have acquired expertise on this platform for the past 11 years, so it's also a good referral list in case anyone gets media requests for comments! https://bsky.app/profile/qianhuang.bsky.social/post/3lfsaeja7bc23 -
