"For Americans unfamiliar with the evangelical world, it can be hard to grasp how rapidly this right-wing movement is changing Christianity in the U.S. and turning politics, in many Christians’ minds, into a zero-sum war between the forces of evil and ...

@lightninhopkins Not sure what you mean. I don't see any Dolce Gabbana ads when I click to read, or any others, for that matter.

@kalfatermann I love the German Sprichwörter. There often are not good equivalents in English, so my German-American spouse and I end up saying them in German to each other when the occasion to use them arises.

*laughs* It's almost the same with my wife and me. We live with three languages and two cultures, so to speak. English is our main language, as it is also the main language in our work. Now and then there are phrases that simply cannot be translated, so we look for alternatives.
Example: "Du bist auf dem Holzweg". Directly translated: You are on the Wood way. That doesn't make sense, of course. Alternatively: "You're on the wrong track" or "You're barking up the wrong tree"

"The danger of the Christian nationalist worldview is that it raises the stakes of political contests exponentially, transposing political opponents into existential enemies. Politics are no longer understood to be disagreements between fellow citizens of goodwill but to be apocalyptic battles over good and evil, fought by agents of God against agents of Satan."

@wdlindsy Uh, when was Christian nationslism ever NOT toxic?

@edwardchampion I'd point you to what Robert P. Jones actually says in Chauncey DeVega's interview with him and not to a headline that may or may not have been written by DeVega. Headlines are notoriously superficial, aren't they, and often misleading?

@kalfatermann Du bist auf dem Holzweg is entirely new to me. Glad to learn a new Sprichwort. You and your wife are having some rich cultural experiences, living with three languages and two cultures. I find that thinking in another language than my native one helps expand my brain, to look at things differently, etc. I think it may have been Rilke who said we grow other souls when we speak other languages.

I know a similar saying: "Mit jeder neuen Sprache wurzelst du in fremden Landen." .. "With every new language you root in foreign lands."
Reading, learning, being curious, questioning things, remaining open to new and different views, changing perspectives, that changes a lot, and you grow with the knowledge you gain. What could be better?

@kalfatermann I like that German saying very much, and need to remember it. Love your final paragraph and its good question.

@lightninhopkins I have an ad blocker that seems to work sometimes and other times not, so I think probably it was working when I clicked to read and blocked ads.
