I love how @jalcine records himself reading his blog posts, instead of using a robotic, impersonal text-to-speech translator.
For image descriptions, there are great resources on https://alttexthalloffame.org, plus the "Alt4Me" hashtag, if you need help.

Yes, there are cases where, putting aside its environmental impact for a moment, AI does have practical use. But unless you can verify that the text it generates is correct, it's pretty much useless.

Addendum: I shouldn't say "useless", I suppose. The thread I linked to actually disproves that claim, as some people do find value here.
But I genuinely just feel bad that that's often the only option.

I'd love to collect more examples!

@stefan That's an interesting thread, as over the last few years I've seen common guidance for alt text push towards a "keep it simple" philosophy. Of course, there's a lot of nuance that often gets missed in those conversations, which the commenters address by talking about which images they want described in what way. I guess a lot of the time it's so hard to get people to do alt text *at all* that the "keep it simple" method works at a basic level to lower the barrier.

@Sharksonaplane Yeah, different people will have different preferences. And it makes a lot of sense, "the blind and visually impaired people" is a label that covers a multitude of conditions and human stories behind it.

@stefan Be My Eyes is an app that pairs sighted and low vision users for assistance. There are two programs here, one is human to human, tho they recently added a separate app that is AI.

@box464 Interesting! I've seen Be My Eyes mentioned a few times on here, but only in the context of its use of AI, and I haven't really looked into it further. Thank you for sharing this!
