Just for clarification,
I'm still doing fairly standard slip,eth,IP and so forth, just written from scratch following rfc's & done in userspace instead of having that as privileged os/kernel component

We need to look into SLIP, TIL of its existence.
We'll be reversing the FOSS drivers for our hardware and probably writing docs for it before we do any net stuff in our kernel. We have a habit of writing documentation for whatever it is that we do, and we spend a lot of time reversing Linux drivers
