Just because said media empire is using the same federation protocol as that one guy
"Their in cahoots together"
"Omg, secret meetings, oh its just about tech interop? There must be a hidden meaning"
"Meta did something unrelated to fedi, so i hate them and u"
It ok to have an opinion, but facts are important too

@dansup there's a certain "guilt-by-association" and "don't sit at the table" aspect to it though? like, you can work with them on interop, or you can treat them as a hostile actor. there's other options in between but those are the main two. and so the choice to work with them in any capacity can be seen in a political light. you're not responsible for or condoning their actions, but you *are* at minimum overlooking them.

@erincandescent erin how do you feel about a fep that defines a conformance profile describing some "social networking protocol" that fedi could actually reasonably comply with (with some minor behavioral changes to avoid choking on things like multiple types or expecting hardcoded specific types)
i keep waffling on whether it would actually be a good idea with a good outcome, or a colossal waste of time better spent on something else
-
@trwnh honestly I think codifying things as they exist today with the rough corners filed off and compatibility notes for divergences could be useful
-
@erincandescent @trwnh I think the downside of this plan is to codify current bugs, like insisting that id properties have to be string URL values.

@dansup I loathe Meta and don't use any of their products. I also have zero problems with Meta joining the Fediverse or participating in technical standards discussions, or with anyone using any open source projects they produce, or with interoperating with them, as long as they continue to do all of those things properly, which they have, so far. Do the same people who oppose all this also oppose the U.N., or international scientific cooperation or technical standards?
