Kinda sucks they’re not coming here.

@btp I'm currently in a discussion with someone who's militant about people not going to BlueSky. So far they don't have a solution to offer though. Bluesky is the best place for them to go honestly. For now, it's better than Meta. This place can't handle 700k new people per week. And most people come here and are turned away by a clunky onboarding and an onslaught of people more worried about harassing them about the rules than actually making it a welcoming and enjoyable place. It's not just a tech problem, it's also a people problem.

@jcrabapple the solution is make the onboarding more new-user friendly. I don’t think any people problems on Mastodon, or the greater fedi, are unique to our communities, though. There’s plenty of toxic shit on Bluesky, too.

@btp Every new user going on the big server is a mistake

@btp oh yeah I've seen the toxic shit there, but new users tend to get bombarded here. I've seen it referred to as like an HOA.

@sirber yeah, I think that’s part of trying to make on-boarding easier to use for non-technical users.

@jcrabapple @btp This place just did handle 700k new users at once, according to FediDB. I suspect the reason many aren't noticing all the new users is related - we're not seeing a bunch of performance issues. Mastodon has come a long way in the past couple of years.

@jcrabapple @btp So far I've seen very little of that this time around and more focus on getting new users connected, which is certainly an improvement. Of course, I only see what I see, but

@btp @sirber You might see the onboarding stuff @dansup has recently been working on called "Starter Kits", which I think was inspired by BlueSky.
dansup (@[email protected])
Create a Starter Kit with all your existing friends/fam and share the link or QR code and the invited person will be onboarded and auto follow all accounts in the kit, along with other auto settings. The best part is Pixelfed Starter Kits are ActivityPub objects, and will be compatible with other software! I am working on a FEP 🚀 #pixelfed #starterKits #fediverse #fep

I'd second this.
Haven't seen anyone complaining about e.g. food images getting posted without content warning in quite a while. Requests for missing alt texts have become much rarer and are usually more politely phrased these days ️
Maybe it's a matter of what server people choose to join? ️
